Topic:

Optimising Geomembrane Protection within Lining Systems

Course overview:

Geotextiles that provide cushioning and protection are essential elements of a lining system. They play a key role in limiting the strain response within the adjacent barrier, which is typically an HDPE geomembrane. Performance testing and analysis are required to ensure the most appropriate protection geotextile is selected by using site-specific aggregates and stress conditions. This presentation will discuss test methodologies, highlighting the variables influencing the tests, and will include recent developments and findings.

Speaker:

Ryan Hackney is the Environmental Solutions Specialist for Geofabrics Australasia and has more than 17 years of experience with geosynthetic testing, analysis, development, and applications. He is passionate about the role geosynthetics play in protecting the environment and how these construction materials can be used as an economical and sustainable alternative to traditional construction methods. Ryan has a bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences and a master’s degree in Engineering Geology obtained at the University of Leeds in the UK. He is the past Secretary, and current Treasurer of the Australasian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Exploring the methodologies used to assess the efficiency and differences in geotextile protection
  • Learning how geotextile properties influence the effectiveness of cushioning
  • Understanding the variables that contribute to the strain imposed on the geomembrane liner
