Topic:
Reinforcing Foundations with Geosynthetics
Course Overview:
Geosynthetics are transforming infrastructure projects in applications such as pavements, slopes, retaining walls, embankments and working platforms. Their use can provide significant project benefits by either reducing the amount of aggregate required or avoiding construction methods that are more time-consuming and costly.
In this webinar, Dr Abid Ali will explore several real-world case studies where geosynthetics were successfully implemented instead of conventional methods to either enhance the bearing capacity of working platforms for heavy construction machinery or performance of shallow foundations of permanently loaded structures. The session will highlight how these solutions contributed to improved performance and substantial cost savings.
Speakers:
Dr Abid Ali is an Application Engineer at Geofabrics, based at the GRID (Geosynthetic Research, Innovation & Development) laboratory on the Gold Coast. He completed his PhD at the University of Newcastle in 2016 and has over 10 years of industry experience. At Geofabrics, Abid is responsible for managing technical queries related to the use of geosynthetics for various civil engineering applications such as pavements, working platforms, rail trak bed, basal reinforced embankments, and tailings capping. He regularly liaises with designers, asset owners and contractors, helping them achieve the most optimal solution using geosynthetics for their projects. He has a special interest in numerical modelling techniques and how it can be utilised to characterise the benefits of geosynthetics in civil engineering projects.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the benefits of geosynthetics in infrastructure projects
- Learn how geosynthetics including geocells, geogrids and woven geotextiles can be used to enhance the performance of working platforms and shallow foundations through real-world case studies
- Recognise project benefits such as cost savings, reduced aggregate use, and improved performance
