PFAS contamination is a growing concern in Australia. A study (1) conducted by The University of Queensland across 35 Australian landfill sites detected PFAS particles in every single site, whether it was still operational or now closed.
So, what does this mean for you?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the globe since the 1940’s.
PFAS are known as forever chemicals due to their inability to breakdown easily and can be found in our food and water as well as everyday items such as fast food packaging, stain-resistant carpets and non-stick cookware. PFAS have been reported (2) to lead to health conditions including cancer, thyroid conditions, and liver or kidney diseases. (2)
When products containing PFAS reach the end of their usable life, they are disposed of and end up in landfills which, if not adequately lined, can leach back into the environment.
Traditionally lining systems such as HDPE and Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL) used in landfill sites, have been found to be inferior at containing PFAS particles. As innovation is at the forefront of everything we do, we've invested over $1million to upgrade our GCL line.
After identifying a gap in the market for GCLs that tackle the growing PFAS issue, Geofabrics is proud to announce that we're launching SORBSEAL®, an improved GCL that can capture PFAS particles (3).
Developed right here in Australia, by our team at the GRID laboratory, SORBSEAL® is the result of ongoing testing and research relating to how products perform under the most challenging of conditions.
SORBSEAL® is a hybrid geosynthetic clay liner designed as a hydraulic barrier to liquid contaminants using bentonite and powdered activated carbon to trap and seal dangerous chemicals away. SORBSEAL® lays at the base of, and over contaminated landfill sites like a blanket to stop it leaking out and contaminating the environment around it.
